Why is it so difficult to resize App windows?? I want to grab the border of an app and there's an impossibly tiny edge that allows grabbing. Is there anyway to fix this?

I want to grab the border of an app in order to resize it and there's an impossibly tiny edge that allows grabbing. I often-times end up clicking on what is behind the app instead of the app edge. Is there any way to fix this?

This is an ancient issue and it's due to obsolete UI design that doesn't handle high resolution screens well. What Windows needs to do is allow the mouse to work on borders / corners if they are "close". It would be nice if there was a shortcut like holding shift while being close to a border to snap the mouse to the border. But yeah, MS wants to blame the UI design issue on user settings which is not helpful at all.

    Hi Micki,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having difficulty resizing app windows. This issue can be caused by a few different factors, such as the size of your screen or the resolution settings on your computer.

One thing you can try is Resize and Restore Using the App’s Window Menu:

    • Press Alt + Spacebar to open the program's window menu.
    • Select Maximize to make the app full-screen or Minimize if it is already in fullscreen mode.
    • Once the app is resized, drag the app window to resize it again.

Another option is to use the keyboard shortcut to resize windows. Hold down the Windows key and press the left or right arrow key to snap the window to the left or right side of the screen. You can then use the same shortcut with the up or down arrow key to resize the window to take up a specific portion of the screen.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Your Sincerely

    Hello Hahn,

The keyboard shortcut using the Windows key and arrow keys helps a bit! I know I can drag the app window to the side and start with the half-screen sizing and then resize from there, but the keyboard shortcut will make that method of resizing even quicker. (Especially since dragging it doesn't work on the edges where multiple screens meet.)

(I still think the issue itself should be fixed -- it's pretty frustrating when something you used to be able to do easily becomes difficult.)

    Thanks,
    Micki

I have this same problem resizing Office 365 windows in Windows 11.

I've followed the instructions offered in the various strings on this topic for changing the directory settings, which fixed my ability to grab the sides of Office application windows and resize, but these changes did not affect the top edge and corners of the windows, which are still so narrow as to be almost impossible to select and drag.

I run into this problem on a daily basis as I try to adjust my Office window sizes to the various screens I use at home, office, and on the road. This is super annoying and slows down my work.

This is a terrible user experience. Relying on the 'snap' functionality is avoiding the underlying problem. Having a 1-pixel-wide border for windows on a 4K monitor makes it nearly impossible to get the cursor in the right position to resize the window.

Yeah, snapping the windows works. But I don't always want to snap them.

    Please fix this!
