Immersive Reader and accessibility

Completed

All students need to access learning in a way suitable for them. OneNote Class Notebooks leverage tools such as Immersive Reader, Translator, and Accessibility Checker to support students with a range of complex needs.

Immersive Reader

Any OneNote page with text can use Immersive Reader.

  1. Navigate to the View tab in the ribbon.
  2. Choose Immersive Reader.

Accessibility Checker scans the page for any accessibility issues. Suggestions include an explanation of why this item is flagged and how to fix the issue with a link to further information.

Activity

Try out Immersive Reader. Add some text to a OneNote page and start Immersive Reader.

  • Select the play button to listen to the text being read aloud.
  • USe the options under the settings button to adjust the speed or type of voice that reads.
  • Use the Text Preferences, Grammar Tools, and Reading Preferences tabs to customize how the text looks, to use the line focus, turn on translation, and use the picture dictionary.

Use audio for accessibility

Educators can use audio features to help all learners by:

  • Providing audio tutorials or lectures, which allows educators to flip their classroom, benefiting students who can then pause and replay the discussion as many times as needed
  • Modeling the correct pronunciation of words
  • Providing individualized verbal feedback

Students can use audio features to show growth or demonstrate understanding in:

  • Performing Arts: recordings of playing an instrument, singing a song, reciting a poem
  • World Languages: pronunciation of vocabulary, practice conversations
  • Language Arts: reading fluency
  • Public speaking: practice

Translator

Helping students develop global citizenship is a great goal, but communication across languages can be a huge barrier to achieving it. OneNote has an easy way to translate information between languages. Start Immersive Reader and in Reading Preferences select the language under Translate.
