Guided practice features in Reading Coach

Completed

While learners can always practice in Reading Coach independently, you may want to set goals or customize reading content to help guide them along. The following features allow educators to create lightweight, code-based "practices" that learners can join for targeted, independent reading, including:

  • Sharing your own custom passages with learners
  • Setting time goals for learner-led practice
  • Monitoring practice data over time

All reading activity in Reading Coach, whether it's part of an educator-created practice or now, accrues toward the "My progress" tab discussed in the previous section.

Note

To access these features, educators and learners must have Microsoft Entra ID (School) accounts and belong to the same Microsoft 365 tenant.

Understanding the teacher/student toggle

Educators signed in to Reading Coach see a new toggle on the top of the home page. This toggle lets you switch into student mode and experience Reading Coach like a learner.

You can also use it to join your own practices to preview how they look for your learners, but don’t worry–you don’t show up in your class list on the other side!

Creating a new practice

Whether you want to set a time goal for independent, learner-led reading (they can choose to read anything in the app, including AI-generated stories), share a custom passage, or select an existing one from the built-in ReadWorks library, Reading Coach makes it easy to tailor practices to your learners’ needs.

To create a new practice:

  1. From the teacher home page, select New.
  2. Add a Title and a Due date.
  3. Choose a Practice type:
    • Open reading, where any reading completed by a learner in Reading Coach counts toward a time goal
    • Single passage, where you attach a passage (paste your own or pick from the built-in ReadWorks library).

Tip

Try using Copilot to generate a custom passage. If you’re using Copilot Chat in Edge, it’s just one click away!

Share a practice with learners

Once you create a practice, you're taken to the “Share” page with an easy-to-copy join code and shareable link. You can always access the join code or link for a practice in Practice view, which is discussed next.

Monitor learner progress

Reading Coach also lets you track progress toward a time goal or completion status of a shared passage, along with average correct words per minute and reading accuracy. This data can help you understand how your students are progressing and where you might want to support.

Select a practice on the Teacher home page to open Practice view. You see at-a-glance data such as:

  • Progress toward a time goal (open reading)
  • % of passage read (single passage)
  • Average correct words per minute (WPM)
  • Average reading accuracy

You can also select a learner in the practice list to open Learner view and review their historical data across the practices you shared.
