Overview
Active Directory is Microsoft's directory service product. It has been renamed Active Directory Domain Services, or AD DS. A companion product is Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services, or AD LDS (formerly called Active Directory Application Mode, or ADAM).
A directory service is a repository of network information to manage users and resources in a network. In the past a directory service was called a network operating system or NOS. AD DS is a multi-master LDAP compliant database of information about resources on the network. It provides a means of centrally organizing, managing, and controlling access to the resources.
