Introduction
Windows Azure SQL Reporting is a cloud-based service built on the Windows Azure platform, and based on Windows Azure SQL Database, SQL Server, and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) technologies. Unlike SSRS, which is a software product that you install and maintain, SQL Reporting is a service that is hosted on hardware in Microsoft datacenters. SQL Reporting takes care of provisioning and maintaining the hardware and software layer, freeing you to concentrate on report design and management. All you need to do is sign up for the service, get an invitation code, and add SQL Reporting to your existing Windows Azure subscription. In this release of SQL Reporting, after you add Reporting to your existing Windows Azure subscription, you can do the following:
- Publish reports from report server projects from SQL Server 2008 R2 Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS).
- Write Visual Studio applications that include a ReportViewer control that points to reports hosted on SQL Reporting report servers. Applications can be developed for on-premise or Windows Azure platforms.
- View published reports in a browser by supplying the credentials given to you by the report server administrator.
- Manage report server contents programmatically through SOAP calls to the report server Web service management endpoint.
