Question re upgrade to MS Azure Synapse 3.5

Hi,

I know that the support for 3.4 will end today, but I am wondering when the functionality will be ending- the notification just says 'After 31 March 2026 Azure Synapse Runtime for Apache Spark 3.4 might still be functional for some time however users will no longer have the ability to create new pools or receive support.'

How long do I have to upgrade the operations?

In Azure Synapse Analytics, the Apache Spark version of a Spark pool cannot be upgraded in place. Once a Spark pool is created, its Spark runtime version is fixed and cannot be changed via Synapse Studio, PowerShell, CLI, ARM templates, or REST APIs.

To move from Spark 3.4 to Spark 3.5, the supported approach is:

Create a new Spark pool configured with Spark version 3.5

Synapse Studio → Manage → Apache Spark pools → + New

Test existing workloads (notebooks, pipelines, jobs) against the new pool

Update references so notebooks and pipelines use the new Spark 3.5 pool

Decommission the old Spark 3.4 pool once validation is complete

This approach is required because Spark pools are provisioned with a specific runtime image at creation time, and runtime versions are not mutable.

Thanks for your question.

As per the latest documentation, Spark 3.4 is already in the end-of-support phase (EOSA) and is no longer supported as of Q1 2026.

At this stage:

Existing Spark 3.4 pools may still run temporarily
But no support, fixes, or guarantees are provided
The runtime can be fully retired at any time

There is no exact timeline published for when it will stop working completely, so we recommend upgrading to Spark 3.5 as soon as possible to avoid any disruption.

Since in-place upgrade isn’t supported, you’ll need to create a new Spark 3.5 pool and migrate your workloads.
