    Hi adam goldich

Thank you for reaching out to the Q&A forum.

From the details you’ve shared, it appears that OneNote is encountering a sync conflict and cannot match your local section file with the version stored in the cloud. This is what causes the section to appear under Misplaced Sections.

To assist you, I recommend reviewing this official Microsoft article, which outlines possible solutions for your scenario: Fix issues when you can't sync OneNote (Mac)

However, since you have concerns about syncing, please try the following steps:

    1. Check OneNote for the Web: Confirm if the latest version of your notebook is available online before making any edits.
    2. Review page versions: On a page, go to History > Page Versions to check if newer edits are stored locally.
    3. Create a new section: If a section refuses to sync, make a new section in the same notebook and copy all pages over; this often clears the corruption.
    4. Force a manual sync: From the menu bar, select File > Sync This Notebook (or Sync All Notebooks).
    5. Sign out and back in: Go to OneNote > Sign Out, then sign in again to refresh your credentials and see if anything changes or happens again.

Please note, these initial steps may not fully resolve the issue, but they will help narrow down the cause so we can work toward a permanent fix. I hope these suggestions prove helpful in resolving the problem.

I look forward to your response and to assisting you further if needed.
