Unable to create or switch to a private Azure directory after account sign-up

My colleague and I are trying to transfer resources from my Azure account to hers. She signed up for a new Azure account using her private Microsoft account.

However, upon sign-up, her account was automatically placed into the directory of a legal firm that had previously shared a SharePoint environment with her (a long time ago). Now:

  • The "Switch directory" option does not allow selecting any other directory nor creating a new one.
  • Under Microsoft Entra ID → Manage tenants, the "Create" button is greyed out and cannot be clicked.
  • "Leave tenant" and "Delete" are also not functional.
  • Logging into Azure via an incognito/private browser window (as suggested in this post) does not solve the issue.

We need a way for her to have a completely private Azure directory that is not linked to any organization. How can we resolve this so she can manage her own resources independently?

Microsoft Security | Microsoft Entra | Microsoft Entra ID
