Upload limit reset unclear, plan not visible, GPT‑5 shown despite “Pro/Enterprise only” message

I'm using Microsoft Copilot on Windows 11 Pro (desktop app). A few weeks ago, I uploaded at least 25+ screenshots in a single session. Eventually, I received a message stating I’d “reached the upload limit for the day.” However, there was no information on when that limit resets, how many uploads are allowed daily, or whether the count is tenant- or session-based.

By comparison, other platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini do clearly state when upload limits reset. Is Copilot expected to provide similar transparency for daily limits?

Additionally, when I check my account details via the desktop or mobile app, there's no mention of my current plan. I’m offered an option to upgrade to Copilot Pro, but the actual tier I'm on isn't disclosed.

What's confusing is that when chatting with Copilot, I was told “GPT‑5 is for Enterprise or Pro users.” Despite that, I do currently see and use the Smart (GPT‑5) mode alongside Quick and Think Deeper—so I’m wondering:

  • Am I on a limited or internal plan that isn’t surfaced in the UI?
  • Is GPT‑5 (Smart) being rolled out more broadly than expected?
  • Is that “Enterprise or Pro only” message outdated or region/tenant-specific?

Questions:

  • Where can I view upload caps, usage history, and reset windows in Copilot?
  • How can I confirm my current subscription/tier in the app or account settings?
  • What are the conditions for seeing GPT‑5 in Copilot without being a Pro or Enterprise customer?

Happy to provide screenshots of the upload limit message and interface if needed. Hoping someone from Microsoft or the community can clarify.

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Thanks for your detailed question, andre boi.

I understand how confusing it can be to encounter conflicting information while actively using Microsoft Copilot. You have done a great job documenting your experience, and I will clarify what is currently known based on the latest updates:

    1. Microsoft Copilot does enforce daily upload limits, but these limits are currently NOT officially documented or clearly differentiated between tiers. There is also no visible usage tracker or reset timer in the Copilot interface. If you encounter the “upload limit reached” message, the recommended course of action is to wait a few hours and try again.
    2. Regarding your subscription tier, Microsoft does not display your active Copilot plan directly in the desktop or mobile app. However, you can check your subscription (if your organization allows it):
      1. Opening the Microsoft 365 home screen
      2. Clicking your profile picture in the top-right corner
      3. Selecting My Account > Subscriptions
    3. Microsoft has officially confirmed that GPT‑5 is going to be available to all Copilot users, including those on the free tier. This means the "for Pro/Enterprise only” message you saw is likely context-specific or outdated due to a recent change in policy. Microsoft is simply expanding access to GPT‑5 more widely than initially expected to attract more users.

To summarize, a broader rollout of GPT-5 is currently underway, and you can check your subscription tier in your Microsoft account settings. I understand that the existence of upload limits, which are not clearly documented or visible in the UI at the moment, could be frustrating and difficult to follow.

However, Microsoft will continue to upgrade Copilot, and these limits will soon become more clearly defined and visible within the user interface in future updates! Thanks for your patience!
