Remove Work/School Azure AD Join Without Data Loss
Hello,
I recently set up a new Lenovo X9 laptop and accidentally selected “Work or School Account” during Windows setup instead of a personal Microsoft account. This caused the device to automatically join my family’s Azure Active Directory tenant.
The issue is that my account on the device does not currently have local administrator rights, so I cannot install applications or change system settings. The device is showing as AzureADJoined = YES, and prompts for admin credentials from an Azure AD admin account.
I would like to know if there is any way to:
Switch this device from an Azure AD join to a personal Microsoft account login without wiping the system, OR
Grant my existing Azure AD account local administrator rights without requiring a full reinstall of Windows.
We have full access to the Azure AD tenant via a global admin account, so we can make changes in the Azure portal if necessary.
Is there a Microsoft-supported method to remove the Azure AD join or convert the account type without data loss?
