Experiencing error with Sharepoint Something went wrong, and we can't print your workbook

A client is encountering an issue with an Excel file in SharePoint, receiving the error message "Something went wrong, and we can't print your workbook" since the middle of last week. While the file can be exported to a desktop Excel file and printed without any issues, no other documents in SharePoint are affected.

This Excel worksheet is used regularly and is printed by several users daily, making the need for manual export time-consuming.

Several troubleshooting steps have been taken, including:

  • Ruling out browser issues, as multiple employees are affected.
  • Changing the name of the Excel file.
  • Copying and pasting the content into a new document.

Despite these efforts, the issue persists. Is this a known ongoing issue with SharePoint on Microsoft's side, or are there additional solutions to resolve this error?

Thanks in advance!

    Hello @Shane Pittman

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

To help us assist you more effectively, could you please let me know:

    • Are there any other files in SharePoint experiencing the same issue, or is it only that Excel file?
    • Can you try creating a new file in SharePoint and check if printing works correctly with it?

In the meantime, you can try the following workarounds:

    1. Clear the Print Area: This is the most common cause of this error.

    • Open the file in Excel desktop.
    • Go to the Page Layout tab.
    • Click Print Area > Clear Print Area
    • Save the file back to SharePoint and try printing again from the browser.

    2. Remove Hidden Objects: Hidden shapes or text boxes can interfere with printing.

    • Open the file in Excel desktop.
    • Go to Home > Search for “Special” > Go to special
    • Choose Objects and click OK.

    • If any hidden items are selected, press Delete
    • Save and test printing again.

     3. Rebuild the Workbook Cleanly: This ensures no hidden or corrupted elements are carried over.

    • Open the original file in Excel desktop.
    • Select the data range, right-click and choose Copy
    • Create a new blank workbook.
    • In cell A1, right-click and choose Paste Special > Values

    • Right-click cell A1 again, select Paste Special, and choose Formats. This applies your formatting without any hidden baggage.

    • Manually re-apply any necessary print settings like page orientation. Do not set a print area yet.
    • Save this newly built file to SharePoint with a new name and test printing from the browser.

Let me know how it goes or if you’d like help walking through any of the steps — I’m happy to assist further.

Hi Demi. I appreciate your help but unfortunately none of the fixes worked. We ended up copying the document as it was and making a new excel file to upload and that was the fix. Thank you though!

    Hi @Shane Pittman

Thank you again for your update and for sharing the resolution that worked for your team.

I’m sorry that the suggestions I provided didn’t resolve the issue directly. That said, I truly appreciate your effort in finding a solution: copying the document and uploading a new Excel file was a smart move, and I believe your experience could be helpful to others facing similar challenges.

To make this thread more useful for the community, I’d like to summarize the key points:

    ========================

Issue Description: Users encountered the error “Something went wrong, and we can't print your workbook” when printing a specific Excel file from SharePoint. Other documents were unaffected, and the file could be printed normally when exported to desktop Excel.

Assessment: The issue appears to be isolated to the original file. After several troubleshooting steps, the resolution was to copy the content into a new Excel file and upload it to SharePoint, restoring printing functionality.

    ========================

I truly believe that other users may encounter the same situation, and your answer could help them a great deal. It would be incredibly helpful if you could click “Accept Answer". This will pin your solution to the top of the thread and make it easier for others to find and benefit from your experience.

Thanks again for your time and collaboration, please feel free to reach out if you need anything further.
