What happens if you format the cells for the time (for example a column) as hh:mm before populating them?

Hello,
I am not very experienced with Excel, but I have managed to create a spreadsheet that logs my working hours.
Every time I enter a new time, the cell automatically reformats to date & time. The formulae still display the correctly but it is going to be very frustrating to have manually re-format the cell to hh:mm
Is there something I have missed?
