Refuses to forget account

Hello,

When trying to log in to outlook through Microsoft Edge browser, it constantly suggests the Microsoft account that it wants me to log in with.

The account it suggests is an organisation/educational Microsoft email account which I do not want to use.

No matter how many times i click the three dots and click "forget", it returns next time I load the log in screen.

I have cleared my cache, which removed the issue. However, when logging in to the educational/organisational account again, the issue returns permanently until I clear the cache again. I do not want to have to clear the cache every time. It appears Microsoft is not properly recognising the "forget" request.

    Hi Justin,

I'm Cherrelyn and I'm here to help.

After forgetting it in the login prompt, please try also removing it from Windows Settings - Accounts - Email & accounts and from edge://settings/profiles if it’s linked there. If it’s tied to your Windows sign-in, you may need to sign it out there too otherwise it will keep repopulating even after cache clears.

I hope this will help and If you have any question please feel free to ask.

    Warm regards,

    Cherrelyn

    Hi Justin,

Thank you for reaching out and welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

I understand you’re seeing an organization/educational account suggested every time you try to sign in, and the “Forget” option doesn’t seem to work properly. Since clearing the cache works but only temporarily, this suggests the account information is stored outside of browser cookies (e.g., in your Windows or Edge profile, or via single sign-on in a domain environment).

    Please try the steps below:

    1. Confirm if your device is joined to a domain network

If your computer is part of your organization’s domain, single sign-on can automatically add your work/school account back to the sign-in page. In this case, you may need to disconnect the account from your Windows profile or adjust your work/school account settings.

    2. Test signing in with your personal account directly

Use the link below to open a sign-in prompt that allows you to select the account manually. Sign in here with your personal Microsoft account: Sign in to your account

    3. Remove the work/school account from your Windows profile

    • Open Windows Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
    • Select your work/school account > Disconnect.
    • Also check Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts, and remove it from Accounts used by other apps.

    4. Clear saved site data only for Microsoft login sites

    In Edge:

    • Go to Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Manage and delete cookies > See all cookies and site data.
    • Remove entries for login.microsoftonline.com, microsoftonline.com, login.live.com, live.com, and outlook.com.

    5. Try an InPrivate window to verify

Open Edge in InPrivate mode (Ctrl+Shift+N) and check if your personal account is now the only one suggested.

I truly hope this helps! Please let me know how it goes! Take care.

    Warm regards,

    Winnie

    Hi Justin,

Since the account isn’t saved in your system settings, it’s most likely stored in your regular browser’s cookies or autofill. Clear cookies, cached data, and saved sign-ins for that specific site, then restart the browser. If you want to keep other cookies, you can just delete the ones tied to Microsoft/Office domains. That should stop the work email from auto-selecting in a normal window.

    Warm regards,

    Cherrelyn
