Hi Margaret Buono,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!
I understand how frustrating it can be when you're trying to work with a large document, and it keeps getting rejected due to size limits. Since Copilot (and most AI tools) has a character limit for direct copy/paste, here are the simplest workarounds to process your large document:
1 - Break the document into smaller parts
- Divide your document (e.g., by chapter, heading, page, or simply 2K - 3K of words).
- Tell Copilot that you will paste several sections and wait for your final request.
- Or paste each section and ask for it to summarize/analyze right away.
- This option is good if you don’t have a file, and you will be able to control what’s shared.
2 - Upload the Document File
- If your project is in a file, or save it as a
.docx
,.txt
or.pdf
file. - Drag and drop the file directly into the chat, or click Upload button
3 - Attach a cloud file
- Upload your document to Personal Cloud Storage – Microsoft OneDrive
- Choose Attach cloud files > Pick the file in your Drive
-
4 - Summarize or describe the project
- Self-summarize or use a text summarizer to shorten the document.
- Paste the summarized version into Copilot for analysis.
I know this all seems annoying to do, but Copilot (like other AI tools) has a character limit to ensure smooth performance and accurate processing. This technical safeguard prevents system overload, allowing the AI to respond quickly and reliably. So to avoid rejection due to size limits, uploading the file directly is the simplest and most effective method. If that’s not possible, breaking the content into smaller sections or summarizing key parts are good other options.
Warm regards!
