All Office program once open display upon opening:

We're sorry, but Excel has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Excel will need to be closed as a result. Would you like to repair now? I press the repair now button and after a minute. The program closes.

This is happening with all Office programs, and I have no way to fix.

Hi ,

In this case, you can uninstall Office and reinstall it to fix the issue.

The procedure below shows how to uninstall, but I recommend using the troubleshooting method. It will ask if you want to, and if you select it, it will completely uninstall Office.

Then you can reinstall Office by downloading it through your Microsoft account.

If it comes from devices, go to Microsoft Store > Library > Included with device.

I'd love to know if this fix has worked for anyone. It hasn't worked for us on either of the computers in our office. I'll do a complete uninstall, then a complete reinstall. Sometimes the programs work for a day or two and I think it's good, then the error kicks back in.

We went through that cycle 2-3 times, taking up multiple hours each time. Now we're looking at alternative software. Has anyone come up with a fix that actually works?

Hi ,

Are you using a specific add-on, such as SAP, or specific macros for data extraction?

It's possible that one of these things is preventing Office from working, and you're also using 365 or Office 2024, 2021, or 2019.

No, and when this started we hadn't changed anything on our computers. It began out of the blue.

My computer is Win11, the other one is Win10. Both using Microsoft Office 365.

Hi ,

It could be some software corrupting Office, but if you reinstall it, it works again, and then it takes two days for it to stop working. It must be something you use.

Do you have any software for PDFs or Excel or Word conversion?

Why must it be something we use? We haven't changed anything on these computers. Maybe it's an update Microsoft did?

I use FoxIt or Adobe to read PDF's. No Excel or Word conversion software.

It doesn't always take 2 days to stop working again. After reinstalling, the software will work well for a few days (2-6?), then the error message pops up again. We'll choose the "Repair Now" option, which does nothing but it lets us work within the software for a few minutes (5-30 minutes), then it shuts down. After opening the software 6-7 times and being allowed to work, the "Repair Now" option shuts down the program immediately, and I have to uninstall/reinstall again.

Since Repair Now hasn't worked, have you tried an Online Repair from Windows Settings? Exit all Office applications and then see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/repair-an-office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b .

Note that an Online Repair often requires a reinstall of Office. Therefore, you should make sure that you can access your Microsoft account at https://account.microsoft.com/services and that your Office product is associated with it.

I've done complete uninstalls and reinstalls, obviously using our Microsoft account to do the reinstall. Of course we restart, both after uninstalling and after reinstalling.

Yes, we've tried the Online Repair from Windows settings. It runs for hours. Doesn't fix anything.

Devon, if the Online Repair runs for hours without completing, then there is a more serious problem with your Office installation. You may have to resort to manually removing Office from your PC. This will be time-consuming. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/manually-uninstall-office-4e2904ea-25c8-4544-99ee-17696bb3027b . Before reinstalling, make sure that you run the System File Checker for Windows; for more info, have a look at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/using-system-file-checker-in-windows-365e0031-36b1-6031-f804-8fd86e0ef4ca .

I'd be more comfortable following those instructions if they were updated to include Windows 11 and Office 365. All of the very specific "Delete these files" pertain to Office 2016, pretty sure I won't find those files.

That's the problem. Office 365 and Windows 11 have been out there long enough for support pages to be updated, but they aren't. The only support is from volunteers like you, and I really appreciate you and Ivan taking the time, but why does Microsoft depend on volunteers to fix problems with their software?

There are alternative software programs out there and they work well. I only jumped into this thread because I have one last Office 365 program that I haven't found the replacement for and I decided to try the "Help" button again (this time it took me to a place where I got a reponse).

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Let me know if the instructions on how to manually remove Office is updated, but our renewal is in September, after that we'll lose all access.

They apply to Office 2016, 2019, 2021, 2024 and to subscription versions (365), all of which have the main version number 16.
