RabbitMQ Trigger Support in Azure Functions Python v2

The existing RabbitMQ extension is targeted at the v1 programming model, and no roadmap announcement or public preview is available for Python v2. As a result, Azure Functions cannot natively start execution in response to RabbitMQ messages under the v2 worker.

Possible Workarounds

While there can be other possible solutions using other libraries or services like container apps, function apps etc. Below are some approaches:

• Using Python library pika and Time trigger.
• Deploy a lightweight container/service (e.g., Azure Container Apps) that runs a continuous RabbitMQ consumer and pushes HTTP events to a Function
• Use Azure Service Bus as an intermediary if migrating off native RabbitMQ triggers

• Choose an alternative triggering mechanism (Timer Trigger or HTTP Trigger) in Python v2
• Add a RabbitMQ client library (pika) to your Function’s dependencies

• Enable Application Insights or function logging to capture connection errors, timeouts, and message processing details
• Check Azure Function logs for stack traces if connections fail (e.g., authentication errors, network timeouts)
• Verify your RabbitMQ network configuration: ensure your Function App VNet integration or hybrid connection allows outbound to RabbitMQ port (default 5672)
• Use retries with exponential backoff in case of transient connectivity failures
• Monitor RabbitMQ queue depth and Function invocation frequency to balance polling interval vs. load
