Hello Apurva Pathak,
When restoring an OS disk or Data disk from an Azure Restore Point, the 'OS Type' option being grayed out and defaulting to 'None (data disk)', it may be due to the current limitations of the restore operation. This could be due to the type of restore point being used.
During my initial attempt to restore a disk from a previously unused restore point, the OS Type was correctly displayed and matched the original disk's configuration. Please refer to the snippet below from that first attempt.
However, when I tried restoring the disk again using the same restore point, the OS Type was no longer selectable and defaulted to 'None'. This suggests that once a restore point has been used, its metadata may no longer allow the OS Type to be inferred or modified.
To validate this, I created a new restore point collection and a fresh restore point. When I used this new restore point to restore the disk, the OS Type was once again correctly recognized as per the original disk. Please refer to the evidence below for confirmation.
As a result, using a fresh, unused restore point allows the OS Type to be retained during disk restoration. This approach has consistently enabled me to restore disks with the correct OS Type.
