Every few months the search index of Windows rebuilds itself from scratch

I intensively use Windows Indexing to search inside my large collection of documents and Outlook items. Every several months, without any evident reason or action initialized by myself, the index deletes and rebuilds itself. Every time it takes several days until the indexing process is completed and during this time I am not able to perform any suitable search.
