How do I upgrade a basic sku ip to standard. Can't disassociate it.

I received the notice that one of our web services was using a basic sku ip and will be retired soon.

It says to upgrade to a standard sku ip. I would be delighted to but it won't let me. It says I have to disassociate it first. It won't permit this. It's locked to the network load balancer, and I can't remove that either.

It says I can go into the configuration and remove the load balancer. I can't figure out where.

This is driving me crazy.

I really don't want to recreate this cloud service. When I try, I get authentication errors on the storage account I set up when I try to upload the pkg file.

What the heck should I do? Help me tech support! You're my only hope!

Hi James,

Is your Basic SKU Public IP address associated with Azure Cloud Services (extended support)? If yes, it is unaffected by the retirement. Please see excerpt from the notice:

If you have any Basic SKU public IP addresses deployed in Azure Cloud Services (extended support), those deployments won't be affected by this retirement and you don't need to take any action for them.

TP, The IP is attached to a load balancer which is only for the cloud service (extended support). Is there any way for me to tell if this is going to be ok? I don't know why I received the email that it's going to be an issue. I really really don't want to gamble that this is going to be ok in 2 months. If it breaks on Oct 1st, I'll have dozens of people screaming at me and I could lose my job as I had known about this since July.

I really can't afford to gamble on this.

Hi James. I understand what you mean in terms of not gambling.

All of the public notices, email notifications, etc., that I have seen mention the exception for Azure Cloud Services (extended support). Please see link below to FAQ article:

One thing to understand is the notifications that Azure sends out are not "perfect". The system doesn't precisely analyze your environment to determine if the notice 100% applies to you in terms of you must take action.

If you want another way to cover yourself in case something goes wrong you can upgrade your Azure support plan to Standard ($100/month), open a Technical support case, ask them for confirmation, and then you will have a written answer from support.

You could set your support plan to not renew that way it would be a one-time $100 fee.

Creating support case can be confusing, so if you want to go that route I can post detailed instructions.

Thanks TP . I may end up doing that.

I see the qualification about cloud services extended services being excluded now. And yeah, the notifications are not perfect. I really wish the notifications would explicitly list what sites/services would be impacted. Our azure portal has a number of web apps, databases, and other items, and receiving none of the notifications I get from Microsoft actually list which specific ones may have a problem.

Hi James Wall,

You can configure Service Health alerts to trigger Action Groups that include: Email notifications, Webhooks, Logic Apps, Azure Functions.

With a Logic App or Function, you could potentially query the impacted resources and send a more detailed notification to your team.

Azure Resource Graph Queries

You can use https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/governance/resource-graph/overview to query your environment and correlate it with known impacted regions or services. This can help you identify which of your resources might be affected by a given incident.

Azure Monitor Workbooks

Creating a custom Workbook that visualizes service health incidents alongside your resource inventory can help you quickly assess impact.

Thanks Siva but I don't think that will help me. The problem is that the emails from microsoft don't explicitly state which specific webapp, cloudservice, etc, will be impacted. It is just a generic "hey one of your many services your using with us MAY be impacted because we're doing stuff. We know which services because we can tell you're using it, but we're not going to tell you. You have to figure it out yourself. I bet you're wishing you purchased the top shelf monthly support agreement now, huh!"
