OneNote not distributing pages

2025-08-05T13:48:04.2466667+00:00

I am a teacher and use OneNote for my classes and have my students using it too.

For some reason I am unable to distribute pages to my students anymore. It doesn't work on the Online version anymore (it used to), and always comes up with an error, with an option to 'Report', which I always press, but nothing eventuates.

It will sometimes work for me on the OneNote Desktop app, but again, sometimes it does come up with the same error.

Can someone please help, thank you.

Dear @MAN Charissa [Willetton Senior High School]

Thank you for reaching out to the Q&A forum!

To support you better, please provide me more detail:

    1. Is the issue happening with all students or just specific ones?
    2. Does the problem occur in all Class Notebooks or just one?
    3. Have you tried using a different browser?
    4. Have you tested the feature in private/incognito mode to rule out browser extensions or cache issues?
    5. Are you using a school-managed Microsoft 365 account?

Additionally, you can check sync status by opening OneNote Desktop.

    • Go to File => Info => View Sync Status.

    User's image

You can look for any sync errors. If errors appear, note the error code and reply to me.

If possible, could you share a screenshot of the error message or the exact wording? I will help you hide your personal information before viewing it.

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

    Look forward to you!

It was happening for all of my students and for all of my class notebooks.

I hadn't tried a different browser and I just did - I was using Google Chrome, but I have now used Microsoft Edge and it has now worked!

Does this mean I can no longer use Google chrome for my OneNote, or does my Google Chrome need updating?

    Thank you for your help.

Dear @MAN Charissa [Willetton Senior High School]

    Hello,

    Thank you for updating!

For your situation, please take note this point:

    • OneNote Online; especially Class Notebook features; relies heavily on modern web technologies.

If Chrome is outdated, or if certain extensions or browser settings interfere, it can cause errors like the one you've encountered.

Besides that, since the page distribution feature still works when using Microsoft Edge, it strongly suggests that the problem is related to the web browser, specifically Google Chrome.

Note: Microsoft Edge is a product developed by Microsoft and is fully optimized for Microsoft 365 services like OneNote, Teams, and Word. For the best performance and reliability, I recommend using Microsoft Edge, especially for tasks like distributing pages in Class Notebooks.

Although Chrome is a third-party product and not developed by Microsoft, I’ve tried to research possible solutions you can infer:

    1. Update Google:

To ensure you're using the latest version of Chrome, you can infer this article to check for updates and relaunch if needed.

For reference: Update Google Chrome - Computer - Google Chrome Help

    2. Clear Cache and Cookies:

When you visit websites, Chrome stores temporary data like images, scripts, and login info to help pages load faster. However, over time, this data can become outdated or corrupted, causing the issue.

So, clearing cache and cookies helps reset the browser’s memory for those sites, allowing them to load fresh and correctly.

You can follow detail steps by steps in this article: Clear cache & cookies - Computer - Google Account Help

Additionally, you also disable extensions since it helps you identify if one of them is causing the issue. If OneNote works fine after disabling them, you can re-enable extensions one by one to find the culprit.

More detail: Uninstall apps or extensions - Chromebook Help

Once again, thank you again for raising this issue; it’s helped broaden my understanding. I hope you understand that I want to help as much as I can within the scope of this forum.
