We used to use SMS or a phone call for MFA. We use the Microsoft authenticator now. Our users entered their mobile phone number into the portal as part of this process. I have never entered their mobile numbers into our on-prem AD.
Several users have their mobile phone number exposed in their profile and they want me to remove them. I am unable to do so. The numbers are not showing in the attribute editor or adsiedit in our on-prem AD. How do I remove the phone numbers. My admin portal indicates that the details are synced with AD and I can only remove them there. I can't.

In Azure portal, please navigate to Microsoft Entra ID Users:
https://portal.azure.com/#view/Microsoft_AAD_UsersAndTenants/UserManagementMenuBlade/~/AllUsers
Click on the user you are interested in and then on left click on Authentication methods blade. On right you should see a Phone number entry with their number. Click on the context menu (three dots to the right) and choose Delete.

Yes. There isn't a phone number in the user section of the authenticator section of my admin area.

No, the user's phone number isn't shown via My Sign-Ins --> Security info. I have identified other users who are facing the same situation. I don't know where the phone numbers are coming from. When I try to delete a number from the only area that will allow me to edit the number (https://admin.microsoft.com/Adminportal), it returns an error:
@Neil Jarman To help with troubleshooting, can you confirm on one of the affected user accounts via Microsoft Graph query which properties have the user's mobile phone number present? I'm assuming it is mobilePhone on user resource but I wanted to make sure since I'm setting up lab environment with separate tenant for testing.
