ACCOUNT SECURITY

I had unauthorised activity in another country in the middle of the night so I changed my password, followed the steps in "secure your account", also found another page through Q&A where you can end all current sessions. This worked because I had to log back in on my laptop and phone. I use microsoft authenticator and log in fine.

But since then there has been another successful log in that country again. So again I have the option to Secure my account, but this didn't seem to do anything yesterday. What can I do??

    Dear Brodie Ward,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand how concerning it is to see unauthorized access to your account even after taking all the recommended security steps. Your vigilance is appreciated.

Based on your description, here are a few additional steps and checks you can take to further secure your account:

    Step 1. Review Recent Activity

    1. Visit the Microsoft Account Security page to check detailed sign-in activity: See when and where you've used your account
    2. Look for unfamiliar devices, IP addresses, or locations.
    3. If you see suspicious activity, click “Secure your account” and follow the prompts.

Step 2. Enable Two-Step Verification (if not already active)

    1. Even with Microsoft Authenticator, ensure two-step verification is fully enabled: My Sign-Ins | Security Info | Microsoft.com
    2. This adds an extra layer of protection beyond just the password.

Step 3. Remove Trusted Devices and App Passwords

    1. Visit My Account - Devices.
    2. Review the list of devices associated with your Microsoft account.
    3. Remove any devices you don’t recognize or no longer use by selecting them and choosing Remove

Step 4. Check Connected Apps and Services

    1. Visit Apps and services you've given access.
    2. Review the list of apps and services that have access to your Microsoft account.
    3. Click Edit or Remove next to any app or service you don’t recognize or no longer use.

Step 5. Change Your Microsoft Account Alias

If your current email alias is being targeted, you can change it to reduce exposure.

    1. Go to the Microsoft account profile page: Microsoft account | Your profile
    2. Find and select “Edit profile info”
    3. Under Account alias, cick “Add email” to create a new alias (you can use an existing email or create a new Outlook.com address).
    4. After adding the new alias, click “Make primary” next to it.
    5. Important:
      1. Do not delete your old alias.
      2. Instead, uncheck the box next to the old alias under sign-in preferences to prevent it from being used to sign in.
      3. This ensures your account remains accessible and avoids issues with services linked to the original alias.

Changing your primary alias will update how you sign in, but your data, subscriptions, and account settings will remain intact.

Step 6. Contact Microsoft Support (if issue persists)

If unauthorized logins continue despite all precautions, we recommend contacting Microsoft Support directly for deeper investigation:

    1. Visit the Microsoft Support contact page: Contact - Microsoft Support
    2. In the search bar provided on the page, type "Unauthorized login to Microsoft account and press Enter
    3. Click on the "Get Help" button that appears.
    4. Scroll down the page until you see and click on the "Contact Support" option.
    5. When prompted to select your product or service, choose "Other Products"
    6. For the category, choose "Manage Account Security"
    7. Look for and click on "Chat with a support agent in your web browser"
    8. Click to start the chat and describe your issue
    9. Please provide your name and requested details to proceed

    Important Notes:

    • Sometimes, login location may appear inaccurate due to VPNs or mobile network routing.
    • If you’re certain the login was unauthorized, please act quickly to secure your account and report the incident.

Please let us know if these steps help or if you need further assistance. We're here to support you.

    Best Regards,
