can't add credit card

My credit card has expired. I am trying to add the new expiry of my replacement, and the system won't accept it. It seems there is an issue with the name. I have tried leaving the previous pre-filled name, exactly as it appears on card, non-capitalised version of what is on card, and removed the Mr - nothing worked. I tried to add a new card as above = same. It's possible that the subscription is confused because I also login to my home PC with a work account. I'm not sure how I am supposed to pay Microsoft money if they won't accept my card.

    Hello Andrew Lucas

    Welcome To Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I understand that you are facing with credit card issue - you tried to update your credit card on a Microsoft account, but nothing worked.

Here are some steps that you can kindly take to help resolve your issue:

Step 1: Clear and Re-enter Details

    • Go tohttps://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments
    • Remove the old card completely.
    • Add the new card with:
      • Exact name as on the card (no honorifics)
      • Matching billing address for the currency region
      • Use Address 2 if Address 1 is too short
      • Avoid abbreviations

Step 2: Use a Different Browser or Device

    • Try adding the card from a different browser or incognito mode.
    • If you're logged in with a work account, try using a personal Microsoft account instead.

Step 3: Check for UI Rendering Errors

    • If the card is accepted but not visible, this may be due to a duplicate display ID rendering bug. The card is added but not shown

Step 4: Contact Microsoft Billing Support

    • Reference ICM Incident 643471655 and the backend fix confirmed by engineering on 2025-07-14.
    • Use Microsoft Support and select “Contact Support”

    Additional Workarounds:

    • Use PayPal: If available, PayPal may bypass some of the stricter validation checks.
    • Change Billing Admin If you're managing a business account, changing the billing admin can force the system to reallocate a new selling entity, resolving mismatches.

I hope it helps, please feel free to let me know if you need any further assistance.

    Thank you for your time!

    Best regards,

Ian | Microsoft Q&A Support Specialist.
