Hi,

The new Copilot mode in edge, is that available only for Personal accounts?

We have copilot licenses which give us access to some of these features (mostly available through the side panel) but others are not available yet in the browser for business accounts. Do we know if the features will trickle over? Like the AI tab grouping?

    Hi Ashley Fernandes,

Thank you for your inquiry on Microsoft Q&A regarding the availability of Copilot Mode in Microsoft Edge for business accounts.

At this time, Copilot Mode is primarily available for personal Microsoft accounts, and some of its newer features, such as AI tab grouping and Copilot Vision, are still in phased rollout. These features may not yet be accessible in enterprise environments, even if your organization has Copilot licenses.

According to Microsoft’s official documentation, the availability and functionality of Copilot Mode features in Edge may vary depending on your device type, market, browser version, or account type -Microsoft Edge Copilot Mode Overview.

While business accounts do have access to Copilot features via the Edge sidebar, the full browser-integrated experience is still expanding. Microsoft is actively working to bring more of these capabilities to enterprise users in future updates.

    In the meantime, I recommend:

    • Ensuring your Edge browser is updated to the latest version.
    • Signing in with your Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) to access available Copilot features in the sidebar.
    • Monitoring Microsoft’s Edge Copilot page for updates on broader feature availability.

Kindly follow this official article for more detailed information: Using Microsoft Copilot in Edge at work - Microsoft Support

    Hello Ashley Fernandes,

Thank you for sharing your question to Microsoft Q&A

You are right to point out that Copilot Mode in Edge is only Available for Personal Account only, here are some main points:

    • Copilot Mode in Edge is currently available for personal accounts and can be manually opted into via https://aka.ms/copilot-mode.
    • For business accounts, especially those using Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD), Copilot is available in the Edge sidebar, but not all features of Copilot Mode (like the full-page experience or AI tab grouping) are yet enabled.

This led to some feature differences:

    • Personal accounts get access to the full Copilot Mode experience, including:
    • Business accounts currently have access to:
      • Copilot in the Edge sidebar
      • Enterprise-grade data protection
      • Summarization and page-specific queries
      • Admin controls for enabling/disabling features

There is no public confirmation so far about the timeline to bring full Copilot Mode features to business account.

The reasons for this can be concluded in three main points:

    1. Privacy, Security & Compliance
    • Enterprise environments must comply with strict data protection, compliance, and governance standards.
    • AI features like tab grouping, voice input, and page context analysis require access to browsing history, content in open tabs, and potentially sensitive data.
    • Microsoft delays or limits these features in Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) accounts until they can:
      • Ensure compliance with Microsoft Purview, DLP, eDiscovery, etc.
        • Offer admin controls for enabling/disabling AI access to organizational data.
    • For example, Copilot with commercial data protection is governed by a completely different data boundary than Copilot for personal use.
    1. Feature Rollout Strategy & Feedback Loop
    • Microsoft often uses personal Microsoft accounts as a testbed:
      • Faster feature iterations
      • Less regulatory overhead
      • Richer telemetry from voluntary use
    • Once a feature stabilizes and proves useful (e.g., AI tab grouping), it is evaluated for business release with additional layers of control and integration.
    • This “consumer-first → enterprise-later” approach is common across Microsoft (e.g., new Outlook, Windows AI features, Loop, Edge Workspaces).
    1. Admin Control & Licensing
    • Enterprise IT needs granular control over Copilot access:
      • Who can use it?
      • What data can be used (M365 Graph, SharePoint, Outlook)?
      • What happens to AI-generated content?
    • Business Copilot deployments rely on Microsoft 365 licenses (E3/E5 + Copilot add-on), which are still evolving feature-wise.
    • Many AI features are gated behind different SKUs or licenses, while personal users can opt into Copilot Pro or free trials easily.

I hope this provides all the information you need. If you agree with our suggestion, feel free to interact with the system accordingly!
