Moving the VM from one RSV (LRS) to another RSV (ZRS)

We have a requirement is where to

  • Preserve the existing backups of the VM in the current RSV.
  • Maintain immutability on the RSV.
  • Move the VM’s backup to another RSV (from LRS to ZRS).

I have tested and followed below:

  • We attempted to move the existing test VM from a ZRS-based Recovery Services Vault (RSV) to an LRS-based RSV after deleting the backup item.
  • We then created a new test VM (LRSTest) and added it to the LRSTest RSV. A manual backup was initiated, which completed in approximately 25 minutes.
  • Afterward, we stopped the backup for the LRSTest VM and attempted to delete the backup item. Due to immutability being enabled, we were unable to delete the backup item.

This confirms that with immutability enabled, it is not possible to delete the backup item, which in turn prevents moving the VM from an LRS RSV to a ZRS RSV.

  • We also reviewed the Microsoft documentation you shared during the call and noted that if you wish to preserve previous backups and still move the VM to another RSV, the VM must first be unprotected and moved to a different resource group.
  • However, this is not a viable option in your case due to multiple VMs being hosted in the same resource group.
