I have a file that in a directory for external users that does not need to be updated as I make changes to the internal file. Will both files update as I make changes to the internal users master file?

    Hi @Bill Hamby,

Good day! Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum ad sharing your issue.

If the file Is a shortcut or linked reference:

    • If one file is a shortcut or symbolic link to the master file, changes will reflect in both locations.
    • However, OneDrive doesn’t natively support symbolic links across folders, so this setup is rare unless manually configured.

If the file was copied to the second directory:

    • If you copied the file into the external users’ directory, changes to the internal master file will not update the external version.
    • Each file becomes independent once copied, and edits to one won’t affect the other.

If you want external users to always see the latest version, you can share the original file via OneDrive with view-only or edit permissions:

    • Choose the file you want to share > Click icon Share on the right of the file

    User's image

    • Click gear icon at the bottom of the sharing window

     User's image

    • Choose Anyone if you want to share externally
    • You can set up View/Edit Only, set expiration date and set password if you want it.

If you need any further assistance or clarification, feel free to reach out. We're here to help.

Thank you very much for your understanding and your cooperation.
