Syncing Error of my OneDrive files due to organization restrictions

I know my educational organization blocks specific file types for OneDrive. I am trying to store my folders inside OneDrive which also contains a number of those blocked files.

How would I stop the syncing for those specific files or even the folder itself? Would it be possible to just store it locally and exclude it in OneDrive?

    Hi Dexteeee,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

First, as I understand it, your issue is a OneDrive syncing error caused by organizational restrictions (your school or company blocking certain file types).

Based on your description, please try the following steps to resolve the issue:

    Disable Folder Backup

This feature might automatically back up important folders like Documents, Pictures, and Desktop to OneDrive, potentially including restricted files.

    • Click the OneDrive cloud icon in your system tray (bottom-right corner of your screen).
    • Go to Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup.

    User's image

    • Turn off backup for folders like Documents, Pictures, and Desktop.
    • Select Stop backup to confirm.

    Pause Sync Temporarily

This gives you time to adjust settings without more files trying to sync or causing errors.

    • Right-click the OneDrive icon in the system tray.
    • Select Pause syncing for 2, 8, or 24 hours.

    Unlink OneDrive Temporarily

This will completely stop OneDrive from syncing with your PC.

    • Go to Settings > Account > Unlink this PC.
    • This stop syncing entirely.
    • You can relink later and choose selective folders to sync.

    Selective Sync

This lets you choose precisely which folders you want OneDrive to sync, allowing you to exclude those containing restricted files.

    • Go to Settings > Account.
    • Select Choose folders.
    • Uncheck the folders you don't want synced to OneDrive.
    • Note: If the folders are greyed out, you'll need to disable folder backup first, as described in step 1.

      Files On-Demand Settings

    • In OneDrive Settings, ensure Files On-Demand is enabled.

    • This allows files to remain online-only unless opened

I hope these steps help you resolve your syncing issue. Please feel free to reply to this email if you need further assistance or have any questions.

Please understand that our initial response may not always resolve the issue right away. But with your help and a bit more detail, I'll try my best to help you.

    Looking forward to your reply!

To prevent specific files from synchronizing, download them to a local folder which is not synchronized with OneDrive. This means a location which is outside the local OneDrive folder.
