Azure credit program

Dear Azure Support Team,

I am reaching out to seek clarification regarding the Azure credit program I am currently enrolled in.

I received $1000 in free Azure credits, and I’ve been actively using the services under this program. However, as of now, the entire $1000 credit has been consumed.

I understand from the original program terms that the credits are valid until September 14, 2025. I would like to ask:

  1. Since the $1000 credit is now $0, will I start being charged automatically for any usage beyond this point?
  2. Or will the services remain free (within some limits) until September 14, even though the credit balance is depleted?
  3. If possible, could you confirm if my subscription is currently in a free/grant plan or already converted to a Pay-As-You-Go model?

Attached are:

  • My previous invoice showing a $0 total due to the credit
  • A screenshot of my cost analysis showing the recent usage

I want to avoid unexpected billing, so I would appreciate any clarification you can provide about my subscription status and whether I need to take action.

Best regards,

Muhammad Rivaldo

Hello fariz rivaldo, once your free credits are used, any additional usage of the Azure services will incur charges, unless you spin up some of the resources in the Free SKU. Again, not all services offer a Free SKU and so, you'll be restricted there.

    Hi fariz rivaldo,

As you have used up your 1000$ credit limit, the following are the responses to the questions you have asked:

    1. Since the $1000 credit is now $0, will I start being charged automatically for any usage beyond this point?

No, you will NOT be charged automatically. Once your credit balance reaches $0, Azure will suspend your services to prevent any accidental charges. Azure does not automatically switch you to Pay-As-You-Go, nor will it charge your payment method unless you manually upgrade.

    2.      Or will the services remain free (within some limits) until September 14, even though the credit balance is depleted?

No — the credit expiration date (like Sept 14, 2025) simply defines the maximum time window in which you can use your $1000 credit. So once the credits are gone, you wouldn’t be able to utilize the services for free unless you're using services under the Azure Free Tier (which has specific limits). The free validity is for the credits themselves, and not for continued free usage of services once the credits are exhausted.

     3.    If possible, could you confirm if my subscription is currently in a free/grant plan or already converted to a Pay-As-You-Go model?

To check your subscription, follow the steps below.

    ·       Sign in to the Azure Portal: Go to https://portal.azure.com and log in with your credentials.

    ·       Navigate to Cost Management + Billing in the portal.

    ·       If you have access to just one billing scope, select Properties from the left menu.

    ·       The Type value on the Properties pane determines the type of your account. It can be Microsoft Online Subscription Program, Enterprise Agreement, Microsoft Customer Agreement, or Microsoft Partner Agreement.

You can refer to this document for more information: View your billing accounts in Azure portal - Microsoft Cost Management | Microsoft Learn

You can follow the following steps to avoid unexpected charges:

    1. Set Up Budget and Cost Alerts Use Azure Cost Management to set alerts when usage or spending crosses a threshold.
    2. Stop Non-Essential Resources Visit All Resources on the portal and stop or delete the services that might incur costs.
    3. Check for Spending Cap (for Grant/Sponsorship Subscriptions) Some grant accounts automatically include a spending cap. If it’s enabled, services will auto-suspend when credits run out.
    4. Consider Upgrading Only If Needed Upgrade to Pay-As-You-Go if you're ready for actual billing.

Please let me know if you need any further clarification or assistance. I am happy to help you with your queries.

    Thanks,

    Rashmika
