One note not syncing my free 10+ year account which I frequently use after I added another paid M365 account to the same Mac device

Hello team,

I have been using my account which I have been using for 10+ years and this account is an unpaid account to my Mac device.

More recently I added another M365 paid account. After I added the two accounts, my one note which was on my free account, stopped syncing on that device.

It would not sync any data at all. I did all the following :

  1. removed the paid account, added it back
  2. uninstalled one note and reinstalled one note and added back the free account only
  3. added the paid account back.

None of the above steps fixed. Can you advise on how to fix this issue ?

Edit # 1 :

  1. I also tried opening my onenote online and tried to "Edit it using the desktop app" option. but it would indefinitely have the spin saying : "Opening Notebook Opening link ..." and it doesnt open the book at all.
  2. I repeated the same step above, second time after removing the paid account and the system had only the free account. Still no change.

Thanks much !

    Hello Nat1 ,
Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community.

Since your free OneNote account stopped syncing after adding a paid Microsoft 365 account, this could be a conflict between account permissions or a sync issue. Here are a few additional steps to try.

    1. Since you have both a free account (personal) and a paid M365 account, OneNote may be having trouble syncing due to account conflicts or trying to access multiple notebooks simultaneously. Ensure you are logged into the correct account for syncing because sometimes OneNote can get confused when you have both accounts set up. To ensure it syncs with the right account.

Open OneNote on your Mac and go to Preferences > Accounts and make sure that only the correct account (the one associated with the free OneNote notebook) is connected and active for syncing.

    1. OneNote’s cache might have become corrupted, which can cause sync issues. You can try deleting the cache, which will force OneNote to rebuild it also open OneNote and press Shift + Command + S to manually trigger a sync. If that doesn’t work, go to File > Sync All Notebooks.
    2. Check OneDrive or Microsoft Account Status because sometimes OneNote sync issues are actually due to issues with OneDrive (which OneNote uses for cloud storage) or Microsoft services ensure OneDrive is working properly Log into OneDrive in your browser and check if your notebook is visible and accessible online.
    3. If your OneNote notebook is stored in OneDrive, make sure your account has the correct permissions to access the notebook. Sometimes, switching between a free account and a paid account can affect the permissions or visibility of notebooks ensure to check Sharing Settings make sure the notebook is still shared with the correct account especially if it was shared with your paid M365 account.

Verify that the notebook is still in your OneDrive If you can access OneNote online, verify that the notebook you’re trying to sync is still in your account’s OneDrive and is not archived or moved.
