Onenote email address is old and different to new 365 email address and can't log in on my Macbook

I have had Onenote on my iPhone and on my old Macbook for ages using an old Hotmail email address. I also subsequently purchased a 365 account to use Office products, but using a different email address ( an outlook address, because my Hotmail now gets too much Spam - but the Hotmail address is still the one I have always used to log into Onenote.

I recently purchased a new Macbook Air and I downloaded my Office suite of products onto it. I am not logged into any account on Onenote, but I cannot log in. When I go to the login screen I enter the Hotmail address associated with my Onenote account, the wheel spins for a bit, and then the login window disappears again and I am back to the standard Onenote screen. When I click on the account icon on the bottom left, it reopens the login window, I enter my Hotmail login details, click next, the wheel spins, the login window disappears and so around and around I go. I never get to the point where my password is requested, and I do not get any error message.

I do not want to log out of Onenote on my iPhone, because if I can't log in again (as is happening on my Macbook), I may lose access to way to much essential information.

I'd also be happy to change my Onenote login from my old Hotmail address to be the same Outlook address I use for 365, but I can see in Onenote app on my phone how to do this . . . I am quite frustrated.

Can anyone provide some clarity on what I can do? T

    Good morning,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, I understand that you need assistance with OneNote sign in. If OneNote on your Mac is stuck in a sign-in loop, try these steps:

    Basic Fixes

    • Restart your Mac and try signing in again.
    • Make sure your internet connection is stable.

    Check App and System Updates

    • Ensure OneNote is updated to the latest version in the Mac App Store.
    • Check for macOS updates (System Settings > General > Software Update).

    Sign Out and Reset Credentials

    1. Open OneNote and sign out (File > Sign Out).
    2. Close OneNote, then go to System Settings > Internet Accounts and remove the Microsoft account.
    3. Restart your Mac and sign back into OneNote.

    Clear Cached Login Data

    1. Quit OneNote.
    2. Open Finder and go to: ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.onenote.mac/Data/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/
    3. Delete the OfficeAccount folder.
    4. Restart OneNote and try signing in again.

    I hope this helps,

    Best regards

    JK

    Hi JK

Thanks for your response - sadly nothing of what you suggested is relevant or helped:

    Basic Fixes

Did this several times - to no avail.

    Check App and System Updates

The Onenote app was newly downloaded onto a brand new MacBook Air, so it is the latest version.

    Sign Out and Reset Credentials

Not relevant - the relevant Microsoft account / email address was not listed in the internet accounts in this location.

    Clear Cached Login Data

I don't know how to navigate to this location within the MacBook hard drive (I am not a IT person - I just know how to use a MacBook's standard features for personal use) I tried to put <~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.onenote.mac/Data/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/> into the search field in Finder, but this didn't work. However, given I've not yet been able to log in for a first time at all, perhaps this isn't relevant. ****

But thanks anyway . . . I'll have to find an alternative for Onenote and transfer all the data over manually.
