OneNote Sync Error and Compatibility Issue on macOS Monterey

Hello,

I’m experiencing a persistent sync issue with OneNote. The app displays the message:"Sync Error: Please refresh this notebook to continue syncing," but after multiple refresh attempts, the notebook still won’t sync and none of my notes appear. Additionally, a “Misplaced Section” notebook has been created. I’ve tried various troubleshooting steps, but the issue persists. My notes also do not appear when I access OneNote through the web browser. I’m using a MacBook Air (2017) running macOS Monterey version 12.1, and unfortunately, I’m unable to upgrade to a newer macOS version that OneNote may require.

Is there any workaround that would allow me to continue using OneNote on my current system?

Thank you for your assistance.

    Hello, Jesse Chana

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating sync error in OneNote, and your inability to upgrade macOS further complicates things. Just to clarify, if you are running the latest Office suite( like 16.97) . There may have some compatibility issues with macOS Monterey version 12.1, which is a point to consider

However, there are a few potential workarounds and troubleshooting steps you can try:

First thing you can try is to access it on the web side, since you're unable to sync on your Mac, it's good to rely on the web version of OneNote:

    • Visit OneNote online to check your notes and perform any necessary edits while troubleshooting.
    • If this works fine, it's likely a local issue with the app on your Mac, and you can proceed with the above steps.

    💡1. Clear the Local Cache:

Sometimes clearing the local cache can resolve syncing issues:

    • Close OneNote completely.
    • Open Finder, then navigate to:
    • /Users/User's Name/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.onenote.mac/Data/Library/Application Support/Microsoft User Data/OneNote/15.0/cache

Delete the cache folder then restart your mac, and check if the OneNote sync can be fixed or not.

    💡2. Re-add the Notebook:

If a specific notebook is still not syncing:

    • Close the problematic notebook from your OneNote app (it won't delete your notes from the cloud, just remove it from your device).
    • Re-add the notebook by selecting File > Open Recent > Sign In to the correct account.

If your current macOS version isn't compatible with newer updates, you may consider using an older version of OneNote. It might not have all the features but could help with stability. Please feel free to let me know how this works so that we can further discuss compatibility issues, or synchronization issues.

    Sincerely,
