Azure Application Gateway
An Azure service that provides a platform-managed, scalable, and highly available application delivery controller as a service.
This says the App Gateway and Istio does not work well properly.
Azure Application Gateway to Istio Addon to AKS setup. Have anyone done this setup. The App Gateway does not seem to take the Istio Ingres Gateway as backend.

Istio’s Ingress Gateway is part of the service mesh and expects traffic to flow through its own Envoy proxy.
- Azure Application Gateway, on the other hand, uses the Application Gateway Ingress Controller (AGIC), which translates Kubernetes Ingress resources into App Gateway configurations.
- Since Istio’s ingress is not a native Kubernetes Ingress resource, AGIC doesn’t natively understand or route to it, leading to the “unknown” backend issue.
Meantime,
If you don’t need WAF or other App Gateway features, you can expose Istio’s ingress gateway via a public IP and manage TLS termination within Istio.
