I just got an email appearing to be from Microsoft about having to "make a purchase" or my microsoft entra id tenant will be deleted.

"Complete a purchase by September 14, 2025 to keep your account active"

I don't even know what that is.

I have a hotmail email address from decades ago.

  • I was forced to pick a "child tag" but don't know which would apply so I just grabbed a random one

I assume that's spam?

    Hi David Lee,

As you've mentioned, you have received an email stating "Complete a purchase by September 14, 2025, to keep your account active" in relation to a Microsoft Entra ID tenant.

Few things can be considered here:

This type of message could relate to a Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) tenant that automatically created when you signed up for a Microsoft cloud service.

These tenants are usually created when:

    ·       You signed up for the Microsoft 365 Developer Program.

    ·       You created a Power BI, Power Apps, or Azure free trial account.

    ·       You explored services like Microsoft Copilot or GitHub Copilot.

    ·       You tried out Microsoft Entra (formerly Azure AD Free) or enrolled in an enterprise preview.

    ·       You registered for Azure free services, such as virtual machines, storage, or web apps.

Even signing up for a free service can create one — and Microsoft will remind you to either convert it to a paid subscription or let it expire.

To better understand your case, could you please help us with the following:

    1. Was the email sent from an official Microsoft domain?
    • For example: microsoft.com, countprotection.microsoft.com, @azure.com, etc.

    ·       If possible, please provide the sender's domain so we can determine if the email is phishing or genuine.

    1. Do you recall signing up for any Microsoft services recently?

    ·       This could include Azure, Microsoft 365 trials, Power Platform, GitHub Copilot, etc.

    ·       Even if you did it months ago, it could have triggered the creation of an Entra tenant.

    1. Are you using your Hotmail account for any business, developer, or testing purposes?

    ·       Sometimes developer or preview programs use your personal Microsoft account to create these tenants.

    What to do next:

    • If you're not using any Microsoft cloud services, and didn't subscribe to anything — this may be a default tenant created unintentionally. You can safely ignore the email, and Microsoft will delete the tenant automatically after the deadline.
    • If you're unsure, visit https://entra.microsoft.com, sign in with your email, and check if any tenant is associated with your account.

    ·       Do Not Click on Any Links: Avoid clicking any links or downloading any attachments from the email until you verify its authenticity.

     ·       Report the Email: If you determine the email is indeed a scam, consider reporting it to Microsoft. You can do this by forwarding the email to the Microsoft phishing email address: reportphishing@microsoft.com.

    • If you did sign up for a service, but don’t want to keep it — you don’t need to make a purchase. It will expire on its own.

    ·       Change Your Password: If you suspect any compromise of your account, change your password immediately and enable two-factor authentication for additional security.

As far as I can see your Hotmail (personal) email account will NOT be deleted due to this message. The warning could only be about the Entra tenant, not your email or Microsoft account.

Please check on the above steps and let me know if you require any further assistance from our end. We are happy to help you with your queries.

    Thanks,

    Rashmika
