We have an existing M365 tenant. I want to add a recovery vault (backup). How do I enable Azure services on the existing M365 tenant?

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

First make sure your M365 tenant is linked to an Azure subscription. If none exists, sign in to the Azure portal with a global admin account and create a subscription.

In the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Settings > Microsoft 365 Backup and set up billing by selecting your Azure subscription, region, and resource group. This is required to use Microsoft 365 Backup.

Next, in the Azure portal, search for Recovery Services vaults and create a new vault. Specify the vault name, region, and resource group.

After setup, enable backup in the Microsoft 365 admin center and configure your backup policies.

You must have global admin rights in Microsoft 365 and owner or contributor rights in Azure to complete this process. There's no need to create a new Entra ID tenant—your existing M365 directory is sufficient.

I guess my confusion comes from the abrupt change in look and feel. It takes you to a "sign up" page that looks like something you would use when signing up for an xbox account or something.

    Hi TJ Cooper,

Greetings! Thank you for posting in Microsoft Q&A Forum. We are happy to help you

When you access the Azure portal with a Microsoft 365 account that doesn't yet have an Azure subscription, you're redirected to what looks like a "signup" page.

Often with Xbox/Game-like branding because Microsoft uses the same identity system -Microsoft Account (MSA) -across services.

    • I think Your Microsoft 365 account is already tied to an Azure AD tenant.
    • But you still need to activate a billing-enabled Azure subscription to start using Azure services (like a Recovery Vault).

The Sign-up page may prompt you to:

    1. Confirm your identity
    2. Accept terms for Azure usage
    3. Set up a subscription (e.g., Pay-As-You-Go or trial)
    4. Provide payment information, even if you won’t be billed yet

Once the subscription has been successfully activated, you may proceed with the setup steps outlined in the documentation or as shared by Hossein Jalilian."

If these steps don't work out or if you have further questions about specifics, feel free to let me know!
