Unable to Remove Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 7 PC

Hi there,

Just a quick question if I may?

I'm trying to install Bitdefender on my PC but need to remove MSE first. Unfortunately, I keep getting the error message: "The Security Essentials Installation Wizard is missing a filter manager rollup package needed to complete the installation. To continue installing Security Essentials, you must first download the required package."

There is a link below the text which takes me to a Microsoft page, which informs me that MSE and Windows 7 are no longer supported. I am aware of that! Also, below the link there is another link which says "Get help on this issue." and below that the code: 0x8004FF56

Any ideas on how to sort this problem out will be much appreciated. But please, if your only advice is going to be "Upgrade to Windows 10/11" please save yourself the bother of replying! LOL

Many thanks

George.

See if this older Forum Article helps: Uninstalling Microsoft Security Essentials

Some links in that article do not work correctly anymore, just ignore them.

In case you try a re-install of MSE, go here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201

    Hi George,

I hope that you could solve your issue with a second try.

In case not, perhaps it might make sense that you edit your original post and move this thread to https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum Perhaps one or the other person over there can come up with other helpful ideas ;)

    Best wishes,

    Julia
