Microsoft Surface Pro 8, Windows 11, Surface Dock 2 Ethernet Issues

Hello - I have a Windows 11, Surface Pro 8 device that is connected to a surface dock 2 and has an ethernet connection. Windows is up to datealong with my ethernet drivers; optional updates are up to date as well. My internet drops and switches to Wi-Fi every 10 mins. I have restarted, reset and re-booted my surface multiple times but to no avail.

I have had the same problem with Dock 1 and thought getting a dock 2 would resolve my issue since the former was not compatible with Surface pro 8.

I tried a weird hack - connecting a ethernet to usb adapter to my dock keeps my internet active with no drops. But, I am not comfortable with this solution and would like to figure out what is causing my original problem.

Any thoughts?

    Hi Farhan Faisal,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. Apologies for the inconvenience this has caused you.

Have you tried turning off the Wi-Fi feature first of the device before connecting the Ethernet to the dock or before connecting the Surface to the dock where the ethernet is connected?

It is possible that the device would attempt to detect Wi-Fi as its main source of connection when the Wi-Fi was turned on before the Ethernet is connected. This could also occur if the Ethernet connection drops and then the device would attempt to switch to Wi-Fi connection. Kindly try first disconnecting the Ethernet from the dock or disconnect the dock from the Surface then turn Wi-Fi off and then reconnect the Ethernet. Observe then if still the device switches to Wi-Fi every 10mins.

If still the issue persist, please open Device Manager while the Ethernet is connected then expand Network Adapters. Double-click Surface NET driver then go to its Driver tab. Take a screenshot of that window including the Device Manager window where Network adapters section is expanded then share the screenshots to us here.

    Kind regards,

    Marrion

    HI Marrion,

Thanks for the response. I've tried turning off the wifi before connecting the ethernet to the dock AND before connecting to the surface. Waited for a few more mins in each try and still had the same issue.

    See attached screenshot as requested:

    Hi Farhan Faisal,

Thank you for the response and for providing the details requested. I'm sorry to hear that the issue persist even after turning off the Wi-Fi on the device.

Please try changing the Network Connection Priority value of the Ethernet connection and see if this helps. This would be able to set the device to prioritize connection with the Ethernet over other connection. To do this, follow the steps below:

Open Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center

Select Change adapter settings on the left

Right-click on the Ethernet connection then select Properties

under the Networking tab, select Internet Protocol Version (TCP/IPv4)

    Click Properties

    Under General tab, click Advanced

    Uncheck the Automatic metric option

Enter 10 on the Interface metric section

Click OK then close the Network settings window

    Restart your Surface

Observe if still the device attempts to switch from Ethernet to Wi-Fi every 10 mins or not anymore

If still the same, try disabling the Wi-Fi driver of the device which is the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz as shown on your screenshot. Right-click on it then select Disable device. After disabling the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz driver, observe again if you still get the same behavior.

    Kind regards,

    Marrion
