Surface Pro 2

Windows 8.1 Pro with all patches

Surface Docking Station 2

ASIX AX88179 USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (needed because the docking station comes with an old 100Mbs ethernet port)

The system was working fine until this morning.  Then the Surface stopped talking to the adapter.  This happen a few times.

Ran Windows Network Diagnostics:

Issues found The default gateway is not available   Fixed

Reset the "Ethernet 3" adapter                                 Completed

Investigate router or broadband modem issues          Not run

This is a development box and I have a number of VirtualBox virtual machines.  I was trying to apply the latest patches from Windows Update on three VMs when the network went away.  This is something I did on a regular basis on a Thinkpad 201 running Windows 7 Ultimate x64.  Is this a known problem with the Surface locking up the network interface when there is a heave load from multiple tasks?

    • What happens if you try using the built in Ethernet port on the dock?

    >What happens if you try using the built in Ethernet port on the dock?

The reason I got the adapter was that the built in Ethernet port on the dock is obsolete as it is 100Mbs whereas most LANs are 1Gbs.  IOW, the built in Ethernet port runs at one-tenth the speed of a normal network.

    >Do you have problems without the docking station?

I don't connect to my network without the docking station.  I'll give it a try at some poiint just to test as the Surface's screen is way too small to do any real work on.

I have disconnected the Surface Pro 2 from the docking station.  I can get most of the functionality of the docking station using cables.  The drawbacks are:

    1. Cannot connect microphone.
    2. Output of earphone jack is too low to drive speakers.
    3. Had to get a four port USB 3.0 dock so I could connect both the network adapter and my keyboard-mouse.
    4. The power supply for the docking station, unlike Levovo Thinkpad docks, does not have the same connector as the power supply for the PC (Surface Pro 2) which means there is nothing that can be salvaged from the docking station.

I thought it might be the adapter's ethernet connection and that it might be disconnecting.  But if that were the case then reseting the device via software would not reconnect.

Will let it run this way for a day or two and see what happens.
