Hello BarbaraMatthews2,
Welcome to Microsoft Community.
I understand your concern — when this issue occurs, the system may mistakenly believe that you’re trying to perform a text input action, which triggers the touch keyboard. I’d like to confirm: was a physical keyboard connected at the time? I couldn’t determine that from your current description.
If a physical keyboard was connected, please go to Settings → Time & Language → Typing, and change the “Show the touch keyboard” option to “When no keyboard is attached”.
If no keyboard is connected, you might consider using the Registry Editor to stop the touch keyboard from popping up unnecessarily:
Open the Registry Editor:Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
Navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\TabletTip\1.7
If the 1.7 folder doesn’t exist, you can create it manually.
On the right-hand side, create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value named:
EnableDesktopModeAutoInvoke
Set its value to:
0
Close the Registry Editor and restart your device.
Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, clickHow to back up and restore the registry in Windows - Microsoft Supportto view the article.
If the issue started suddenly, you might also consider creating a new user profile to test whether it’s related to the current account’s settings.
Let me know if you’d like help creating the registry key automatically.
