Keyboard doesn't connect to Microsoft Surface upon startup

I've just purchased a Surface Pro 11 and a keyboard. I find that whenever I turn on the Surface, the keyboard doesn't work unless I physically detach it from the Surface and then reattach it. Does anyone know how to solve this?

    Hello Tim,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.

Judging from your description of the problem, even if you physically connected the keyboard to the Surface Pro 11 before turning on the Surface, the keyboard still couldn't be used when you pressed the power button to start the Surface, right?

At this point, please find the Surface App in your Surface Pro 11. It is usually pre-installed in Surface. If you don't see it, you can also download it directly from the Microsoft Store. After opening the Surface App, please confirm whether you can see your Surface keyboard here.

If you can't see the keyboard at this moment and can only see it after removing it and reconnecting it, then I guess the problem might stem from the driver or the firmware. After all, this is a newly bought Surface, and perhaps the driver and firmware need to be updated. Please visit the following support link to manually download the driver and firmware package that is compatible with your device model:

Please be sure to choose according to the CPU model equipped on your Surface Pro 11, because the Surface Pro 11 has two versions. One is equipped with a Snapdragon CPU, which belongs to the ARM version, and the other is equipped with an Intel CPU:

图形用户界面, 文本, 应用程序, 电子邮件 AI 生成的内容可能不正确。

After the download is complete, install it manually. Then, restart your Surface and check again to see if this issue will occur.

There are 26 pages of reports like yours https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/2307756/keyboard-on-new-surface-pro-11-does-not-always-pai?forum=surface-all&referrer=answers&page=23#answers - this links to the most recent. If updating drivers and firmware do not resolve this, I don't have any suggestions other than to use the Feedback Hub App to file a problem report. Please DO reply with the exact model of the SP11 you purchased.

A couple of people state this is a work around:

I had the same problem like so many others. But just spoke to really helpful chap from MS Support. Sadly I cannot access the conversation but in essence:

    1. Download drivers/update from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=106119#:~:text=Cumulative%20and%20current%20drivers%20and%20firmware%20for%20the,firmware%20that%20have%20been%20released%20via%20Windows%20Update.&msockid=1dea00f5dd72688c0d8016efdc4769ac
    2. Change to Fast boot:
      1. control panel/systems/power options
      2. Choose what the power button does
      3. Turn on Fast Start Up

    Fixed it for me.

He couldn't understand why MS doesn't push this out. Must be going broke replacing keyboards and SP11s
