Why are dynamically scoped VMs not being added to maintenance schedules (bug)?

I have Azure Update Manager maintenance configuration schedules that use a dynamic scope based on a tag value to add VMs to it. I have confirmed the VMs have the correct patch orchestration settings and have the tag properly attached. When I open the dynamic scope, the VMs are not listed in the preview menu. I have to edit the filter, and even if I don't make ANY changes and just click OK, the VMs then show up in the preview.
I confirmed this does make a difference because one of these schedules ran without the VMs showing up in the preview and none of them were included in the maintenance run. Afterwards, I completed the steps mentioned above to bring the VMs into the preview, and then ran the schedule again and they were included this time.
This is clearly a behavior that shouldn't be occurring. Has this already been identified as a bug/issue and if so, is there a resolution?
Before going into the filter's edit mode. There are no VMs in the preview:

Timmy Malmgren 1,521 Reputation points2024-02-11T12:51:34.7133333+00:00 Can just confirm that i do not get this error in my subscriptions, so the bug is not consistent for everyone i guess and that it is indeed not the correct behavior of this function :) My preview is populated instant when selecting tags filter (for the machines matching the filter). 2024-02-12T22:54:53.38+00:00 Hi @Timmy Malmgren and SwathiDhanwada-MSFT - I think an important detail that I left out is that I created these maintenance configurations using Azure Powershell and CLI commands in a script, not through the Portal. I used these two commands specifically:
- New-AzMaintenanceConfiguration (Powershell Azure module)
- az maintenance assignment create-or-update-subscription (Azure CLI)
When I create the maintenance configuration through the Azure Portal and create the dynamic scope, it checks to see which servers match the filters and they show up in the preview window, compared to creating them via CLI/modules where its not doing this check when it creates the configuration.
If you can, retry creating a dynamically-scoped configuration using these commands and see if you encounter the same issue. Thanks.

SwathiDhanwada-MSFT, I do not see a private messaging feature on the Q&A site. Should I open a ticket for this? How can I make sure it gets directed to you so it can get expedited through all the lower levels of support?

2025-07-10T15:28:07.3733333+00:00 This is working for me now. I don't know if a change was made on the Azure side that fixed this, or if it is because I now choose all the resource types in the dynamic scope at the time of creation. I use a script to create the dynamic scopes, and originally I wasn't specifying any types. Are you still seeing this issue?
