Why are my authentication codes 8-digit instead of 6-digit?

My authentication codes are 8-digit instead of the normal and accepted 6-digit codes. How can I get the 6-digit codes necessary for authentication?

    When adding the account you could try clicking plus (+) sign to add account but make sure to choose Other account for type.

    your account may be set to passwordless logon. This will be represented buy a key symbol next to your user ID. go to accounts.microsoft.com\profile to fix this.
